Violet Udovich cemented her position as one of the area’s top sprinters and contributed to a big relay win as Ely’s high school girls track team closed out its regular season with a big performance at Rock Ridge.
The Timberwolves were fourth as a team at Saturday’s Steve Kerzie Invitational, a final tune-up before subsection competition this week.
Ely more than held its own against larger-school competition, with Udovich winning both the 200 and 400 dashes and joining Lydia Shultz, Mattie Lindsay and Miriam Messerschmidt on a four-by-400 relay that stunned Class AA Hibbing and took first.
Shultz added a victory in the high jump and took third in the 100 dash, while Ely’s Kaylin Visser was the runner-up with a throw of 95-7 in the discus.
Udovich, who at different times this season has run in the 100, 200 and 400, pulled away to victory in the 200 with a time of 25.91 seconds. She also claimed victory in the 400 in 58.83.
The relay team, meanwhile, served notice that it will be a force with a winning time of 4:19.24.
Ely also managed a thirdplace showing in the fourby- 800 relay, with Mattie Lindsay, Isabella Macho, Ivy Ohlhauser and Elsa Ellerbroek combining to complete the race in 11:10.21.
The Wolves had three other thirds, with Addison Forsman in the triple jump (27-3.5), Shultz in the 100 (13.4), and Alyssa Ice (91-8) in the discus.
While the Wolves battled larger school opposition including Rock Ridge, Hermantown and Hibbing in the cold and wind on Thursday, they will face schools their own size at the subsection event, held after deadline at Aurora.
Ely will look to advance both individuals and relays on to the Section 7A meet, set for Wednesday at Duluth.
