DeBeltz is individual winner
Northeast Range/Ely is rounding into form at exactly the right time.
With the Section 7A golf meet approaching this week, the Northeast Range/Ely girls are gearing up to defend their section title.
That was evident Monday at the Vermilion Fairways in Cook, where NRE dominated an East Range Conference meet.
Led by first-place finisher Carena DeBeltz, the Nighthawks cruised to an easy victory, dominating a six-team event.
DeBeltz carded a ninehole 47 to win individual medalist honors, while NRE had a 36-stroke edge over second-place Two Harbors.
The whopping margin of victory was evident in the individual standings, with DeBeltz topping the field and teammate Maizy Sundblad five strokes back with a 52.
NRE had four of the topfive individuals in the event, with Danica Sundblad in third place with a 53 and Cylvia DeBeltz taking fifth at 56.
Eighth-grader Coco Gillson wound up 26th with a 75.
NRE (208) stood by itself with Two Harbors (244), International Falls (266), North Woods (268) and Mesabi East (286) far behind. Greenway/ Nashwauk-Keewatin was involved in the meet but did not field a full team.
Next up is the two-day Section 7A meet, set for Tuesday and Wednesday at Minnesota National near McGregor.
NRE is out not only to defend its section girls title, but to gain a berth in the state meet set for June 10-11 at Becker.
