The Town of Morse board met on May 13 and took the first step toward limiting the number of short-term rental units in the township.
Supervisor Bob Berrini wanted the board to put a limit on the number of shortterm rentals.
Clerk Nick Wognum was directed to contact St. Louis County to find out how many are there and what it will take to put a limit on the number of people in Morse.
Board chair Terry Soderberg, who sits on the Area Lodging Tax Board, said the issue has been trying to determine how many there are and if the owners are following the county rules and regulations.
Following the loss of the Green Mining Company building a cannabis plant in Morse, the board will also pursue establishing light industrial areas in Morse.
Berrini said that in order to get jobs here, there needs to be areas for businesses to develop.
The board will also look to put more public land up for sale to increase the tax base.
Soderberg said St. Louis County turned down a request from Charlie Chernak to put a building on a small island on Burntside. He said there were 19 letters opposing the proposal. However, he can put a tent on there and/or a tent pad with a composting toilet.
In other business the board:
• Approved moving the next meeting to June 11.
• Heard over 20 cases at the local board of appeal and equalization meeting held that day. Many were Burntside property owners complaining about a 15 percent increase on land and a 20 percent increase on buildings. This is due to sales exceeding county valuations. • Had completed the annual road inspection and voted to install larger culverts on Schaeffer Road where a beaver dam has caused problems over the years.
• Heard from Soderberg that he contacted St. Louis County about the private property by the airport that is filled with garbage in response to a complaint from a resident.
• Approve $500 for the city’s 4th of July fireworks.
• Will move forward with hiring Clyde Peterson for brushing work on some township roads.
