DeBeltz advances, Sundblad just short, girls third in 7A
Northeast Range/Ely wasn’t able to defend its section title, but the Nighthawks will still send a golfer on to the state meet.
And another just missed out.
Senior Carena De-Beltz punched her ticket south, while Sundblad lost out in an overtime hole, during the Section 7A high school girls’ golf meet held near McGregor this week.
DeBeltz placed fourth in the section after 36 holes over two days, while Sundblad was tied for the final individual slot in the state meet next month.
In the extra hole, Sundblad fell short and only DeBeltz will move on.
But NRE, which went to state as a team in 2023, finished third in the section this time around, behind both champion Walker-Hacknsack-Akeley and Pine River-Backus.
Led by individual medalist Kianna Johnson, who carded a 174 over two days, WHA cruised to the team title with a score of 830, with Pine River-Backus (861) next followed by NRE (917).
DeBeltz was near the top of the heap, however, and took fourth at 204, recording matching scores of 102 on each day of the meet.
Sundblad made a big charge Wednesday, notching a 105 after shooting a 113 on the opening day.
That was good enough for a tie for eighth with Serena Krotzer of Nevis, but Krotzer prevailed during the extra hole.
Next up for NRE was Danica Sundblad, 16th at 240, with scores of 125 and 115.
Cylvia DeBeltz tied for 20th at 255 (126-129) and Coco Gillson wound up 29th with a score of 292.
In 7A boys action, Ely senior Alex Merriman came home with a 15th place finish, carding a 36-hole total of 183 with scores of 92 and 91.
JaydenZemkeshotone round Tuesday, recording a score of 125.
They were the only members of the NRE boys’ team to take part in sections.
The state meet takes place June 10-11 at the Pebble Creek course in Becker.
