Ely’s Violet Udovich prevailed in a showdown between two of the state’s best sprinters, earning not only two section championships, but a pair of section records.
Udovich won both the 200 and 400 meter sprints at Wednesday’s Section 7A high school girls track meet, and set new section standards in both events as part of a big day for the Timberwolves in Duluth.
Lydia Shultz won the high jump while Kaylin Visser was second in the discus, and both will join Udovich in earning bids to next month’s state meet.
The stellar individual performances were part of a big day for the Wolves on a sunny day at Malosky Stadium, on the campus of the University of Minnesota- Duluth.
The Ely girls finished fourth as a team in the 7A event.
“It went really well,” said Ely Head Coach Jill Ellerbroek. “There was great weather and I felt like the girls had really good times against good competition. They did really well.”
Udovich, who has compiled some of the best times in the state in both the 200 and 400 this spring, captured 7A titles in both events and also topped Two Harbors’ sensation Trinity Giddings.
“The person to beat was Trinity,” said Ellerbroek. “We were expecting it to be quite the race and it was, and in one of the races Violet won by two one-hundredths of a second.”
Both Udovich and Giddings topped the previous section records in both events, with Udovich winning the 200 in 25.0 seconds and the 400 in 56.25.
Shultz gave the Wolves their third win by taking the high jump in 5-2, while Visser established a personal-best with a throw 114 feet in the discus, good for second place in the section.
Udovich, Shultz and Visser will all have spots in the State Class A meet, set for June 10 at St. Michael-Albertville.
The Ely girls had two fourth-place relays, with Shultz, Mattie Lindsay, Molly Brophy and Miriam Messerschmidt taking fourth in the four-by-400 in 4:19.57.
In the four-by-800, it was Lindsay, Elsa Ellerbroek, Isabella Macho and Brophy combining for a fourth-place finish in 10:28.78.
Shultz also took sixth in the 100 (13.5) while Katy Brophy (10th, 6:04.72) and Ellerbroek (14th, 6:24.76) both placed in the 1,600.
Messerschmidt was 10th in the 200 (28.38), Macho placed 11th in the 800 (2:41.39) and 10th in the high jump (4-8).
Addison Forsman was at sections in two events, taking 12th in the triple jump (2810) and 14th in the discus (75-3).
