Join Sisu Heritage to celebrate the Finnish tradition of sauna on National Sauna Day, Saturday, June 7. The free, family-friendly event is outdoors, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nelimark Homestead and Museum on Hwy. 21 in Embarrass.

There are two workshops coming up for area residents to learn more about lakeshore restoration. One will be at Greenwood Town Hall on Saturday, June 7 from 10-11 a.m. The other will be at the South Kawishiwi River Campground Pavilion on Saturday, June 7 from 2-3 p.m. They will both cover the same material: Everyone cares about their lake, but what can they do to help it? An overview of why shorelines with natural vegetation are important and the benefits they provide. Then a discussion on techniques, tips, and resources for restoring your own shoreline.

The Ely Weavers and Fiber Artists meet on Monday, June 9, at 11:30 a.m. at the Grand Ely Lodge. Anyone with shared interests is welcome to join.

The Ely Climate Group will hold a meeting on “ Ely Area Emergency Preparedness” at 4 p.m. Monday, June 9 at the Ely Senior Center. Local experts Aaron Kania (USFS), Brad Roy (Ely Emergency Manager), Gloria Erickson (Firewise) and Mike Ostlund (Eagles Nest Director of Emergency Management) will discuss how to be better prepared and where to find information. Take home a list of useful resources.

The next Braver Angels Gathering will be on Wednesday, June 11 at 6 p.m. at the Ely Senior Center, the topic will be “Do you think Ely is a dog-friendly town?” Members of the community have strong feelings about the topic, dog owners and non-owners alike. In a small group discussion format, participants will share feelings about questions such as: “What makes a town dog-friendly?” “How do you respond when you see a stray dog?” “What benefit do you think a dog park brings to the community?” Participants will also learn something about Ely ordinances regarding dog ownership. The goal of the Braver Angels Ely Alliance is always to engage respectfully with other community members, even when there is disagreement. The discussions range from broad issues that affect the entire country and local issues that are important to the Ely community. Donations to help cover the costs of the Senior Center rental are welcome but not required.

Northwoods Kids Fishing Derby on June 21. Located at Veterans on the Lake Resort, preregistration required. Starts at 9 a.m. Sponsorships and donations support Ely Community Resource.

Cribbage is being played at the Zenith Apartments at 965 E. Camp St in Ely on Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. Join in, have fun. Bring your own snacks.

Northwoods Partners Caregiver Support Group meets the third Tuesday of the month from 11 a.m. to noon at the Ely Area Community Hub, 760 E. Miners Drive.

New closed AA meeting; primary purpose men’s group. Will be held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 226 E. Harvey St.

The Ely Senior Bridge League has a weekly session of bridge starting at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the Ely Senior Center, front room. Reservations are recommended. Call Terry Cooper at 651-230-2117 for more information.
