Wolves earn postseason honors
Ely’s high school baseball team raked in a slew of postseason acclaim, including all-state recognition for decorated senior Caid Chittum.
Chittum closed out his prep career with a spot on the All-State Class A Team, as named by the Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Association.
The recognition comes on the heels of a dynamic prep career for the shortstop, who also was named All-Arrowhead Conference for a fourth straight year.
Chittum anchored the Ely defense and proved to be one of the best shortstops in northern Minnesota.
At the plate, he led the Wolves with a sizzling .494 average, going 40-for-81 with 16 doubles, three triples and 27 runs batted in, all team-highs. He also scored 24 runs.
Chittum was one of 25 players to be named to the Kenyon has been coming to Ely for more than a decade.
“We’ve developed a great relationship with the folks from Kenyon and Wanamingo,” said Coombe. “On the last day of the tournament they are always making reservations for the following year and they bring a lot of parents and fans every year. We have made the return trip there a few times and our high school team was there this spring.”
The field also includes several teams from across the area, with Proctor-Hermantown, Duluth Lakeview, Taconite, Cook County, Mc-Gregor and Grand Rapids all making the trip.
Host Ely is the two-time defending champion but figures to have trouble defending its crown in 2025.
“I think the field of teams this year is solid,” said Coombe. “With Duluth Lakeview, Grand Rapids and Proctor-Hermantown, you might have the three top contenders in the area for Division I Legion Baseball.” The DQ Classic serves as just a warm-up of things to come. From July 10-13, Ely will host its Ely Echo Midsummer Classic, bringing 10 teams to the area for a four-day event.
