On to the Water Into the Woods
The annual North Woods Kids Fishing Derby is being held this Saturday, June 21 at Veterans on the Lake (VOTL) on Fall Lake east of Winton. The program begins with kid registration from 9:00 to 9:30. Lunch will be provided, and the program will end at 1:40. Many local groups are volunteering to provide activities at several stations during the program.
While fishing or boating, pay attention to weather conditions and follow good safety practices. Make sure to keep a distance from nesting eagles, ospreys, and loons. There have recently been injured or dead young and adult loons that were reported and are examined for injuries or other causes of death.
The Ely Field Naturalists will be presenting its first Summer 2025 Nature Night Program on Wednesday, June 25th. Sherry Abts will do here first naturalists program of the summer on loons to get everyone ready to take to the lakes and appreciate the challenges that loons have in summer.
Take time out to look closely at the abundance of life to be discovered in the forest areas, both upland and wetlands. This Friday and Saturday, 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at Art and Soul Gallery will host It’s All About Monarchs with photography by Kelly Godfrey and discussion about butterfly and pollinator plants by Bill Tefft.
It seems that everyone is monitoring, exploring and discovering the amazing diversity of plants, wildflowers, fruit, insects, reptiles, birds, amphibians, mammals, and other wildlife that surrounds us. More is being seen and shared and learned as the midyear breeding season progresses around us. If you see something for the first time and can’t identify it, report it and ask others. Someone in our community will help with your questions.
