Ely’s Junior Legion baseball team got a strong pitching performance from Cedar Holman on the way to a victory Tuesday night in Blackduck.
Holman, who attends North Woods but is part of Ely’s summer program, tossed a complete-game six-hitter - and only needed 82 pitches to do so - in a 3-2 victory.
Post 248 struggled in the field and lost the second game of the twinbill 15-9, and Ely fell to 7-4 for the summer.
But Holman was the story in the opener, as the righthander kept Blackduck off balance and let his defense do much of the work.
He struck out four batters and walked two while going the distance.
Sean Merriman, Arturo Cameron and Hunter Halbakken drove in Ely’s runs, while Even Leeson singled and scored a run. Owen Marolt also doubled.
In the second game, only five of Blackduck’s 15 runs were earned as Ely was plagued by many errors.
Drew Johnson paced the Ely offense with two hits including a double and three runs batted in, while Cedar Holman and Max Brandriet both scored twice.
Stig Majerus doubled and Evan Leeson singled and scored a run.
John Warren gave up eight hits and was the losing pitcher and Majerus tossed an inning of relief.
• Cook County’s Senior Legion team overcame a 6-0 deficit and rallied to beat Ely’s Junior Legion 11-6 in a game played Saturday night as part of the 37th DQ Grill and Chill Classic.
Henry Fetterer ripped three hits and scored twice for Ely, and Merriman added a couple of hits.
Majerus took the loss in relief of Merriman, working three innings and allowing six hits with four strikeouts. Johnson also tossed an inning of relief.
