After a rough start to the season, Ely’s age 14-and-under baseball team has rebounded and scored two recent victories.
Both came on the road as Ely prevailed 9-5 at Mt. Iron and scored a 4-1 victory over Hibbing FDP.
Strong pitching was a part of both wins, with Parker Niskala and DJ Johnson combining on the hill to preserve the victory at Mt. Iron.
At the plate, Henry Fetterer scored twice and had two hits, while Lucas Moger also had two hits with two runs scored.
Moger scored and drove in a run as part of a five-run first inning, while both Niskala and Jace Davis singled and scored runs in the opening frame.
Johnson contributed two hits for Ely and Aaro Kari knocked in a run.
At Hibbing, the hosts couldn’t solve the pitching of Ely’s Niskala, who kept their bats silent.
Ely did just enough damage at the plate, with Alden Harding, Hayden Weidemann, Kari and Niskala scoring runs.
Kari reached base three out of four times up, Weidemann wound up with two hits and Fetterer roped a two-run single in the fifth.
• Ely is heading into the final two weeks of regular season play and is vying for a home playoff game on Tuesday, July 29.
