The North St. Louis County Soil and Water Conservation District will be holding a 75th anniversary open house on Sept. 22 from 2-6 p.m. at 505 Third St. No., Ste. A in Virginia. There will be a K9 demonstration on AIS detection at 2 p.m.
At the Ely Public Library on Monday, Sept. 22 at 3:15 p.m. – Hey, It’s a Holiday: Hobbit Day – for all age. Join Jessie in celebrating a literary holiday…Hobbit Day! Sept. 22 is the birthday of the famous hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. In recognition of these endearing characters created by J.R.R. Tolkien, this date has come to be known as “Hobbit Day” so that fans of hobbits everywhere can pause and celebrate the delight that is a hobbit. Sponsored by Friends of the Library.
At the Ely Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. – Curiosity Cohort: Crochet – for older teens and adults. Join in the curiosity cohort to learn the basics of crochet and making granny squares. Please register in advance. Sponsored by Friends of the Ely Public Library.
The Lake Vermilion Cultural Center will be hosting their second FINN-Toberfest on Sept. 23, beginning at 5 p.m. with food and beverages followed by a musical and comedy performance by Steve Solkela and The Solkela Polkela Band. Brats, hotdogs, chips, dessert and beverages will be served. Music is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. A free-will donation will be accepted at the door.
At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. – Get Crafty: Art Roulette - for kids ages nine and up. Everyone will walk out with a unique, community created piece of art. Every five minutes pass the canvas to the next person, until everyone has a chance, ending with your original canvas. Registration required. Sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Sept. 26 is the deadline to apply to be a Lunch Buddies mentor and change a life this school year. Mentors are needed at elementary schools in Aurora, Babbitt, Cherry, Chisholm, Ely, Eveleth, Hibbing, International Falls, Keewatin, Mt. Iron, and Virginia. United Way of Northeastern Minnesota’s Lunch Buddies program matches mentors and mentees to share one lunch break a week throughout the school year. Save the date for the ever popular Pat and Donna Surface who will be singing in St. Mary’s Hall at the Lake Vermilion Cultural Center on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. This concert will be sponsored by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Soudan, MN. Free will donations will benefit the Surface’s non-profit organization - The Spiritwood ‘Forget Me Not’ Foundation which battles Alzheimer’s Disease.
The Ely Community Choir is looking for new members as they prepare for a Christmas concert. The first get together for sign-up and maybe a little bit of singing will be on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the High School Choir room. The performance is set for Saturday, Dec. 13. For questions or more information, email [email protected] Rural interdisciplinary artist and 2025 McKnight Choreographer Fellow Kayla Schiltgen presents her experimental dance performance, “is this magic?” followed by an artist chat on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at The Vermilion Fine Arts Theater. Suggested donation: $10 - $20 at the door. As part of this event, Schiltgen will also lead a free dance workshop for ages 12+, exploring personal expression through movement activities. No prior dance experience is required, all bodies and abilities are welcome. No registration is necessary. The workshop takes place on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Ely Community Center.
