Four snowmobiles went through the ice on Lake Vermilion last weekend.
According to a news release from the St. Louis County Sheriff Department, authorities received a report of snowmobiles through the ice near Tavern on the Bay at approximately 6:22 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28.
Four adults and two juveniles were involved, and all parties were able to make it back on to the ice on their own and with assistance from patrons and employees of Tavern on the Bay.
Emergency medical personnel and fire crews, along with the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, were dispatched.
Five of the six people were transported to area hospitals for exposure, but no other injuries were reported.
Two of the four snowmobiles remained in the water as of early in the week.
The initial report from the incident indicated the snowmobiles went through the ice near a pressure ridge that had formed on the marked trail near the location.
The county sheriff’s department would like to remind those out enjoying recreation on our area lakes to use caution at all times and ride responsibly, to be aware of your surroundings and avoid any questionable areas on the lakes with unknown ice conditions, and to report to authorities if you encounter issues or hazards on the marked trails.
