Dave’s Weather Outlook

March may go to the high side for temps and precip

Sports fans around the Northland are mourning the loss of Babbitt native Dale “Hoagie” Haagenson of the UMD Bulldog hockey team. I was sports reporter from 1998 to 2003 and got to chat with Hoagie often while covering the Dogs. Hoagie wasn’t a big fan of warm weather this time of year because it wasn’t good for outdoor hockey. But, since he also loved baseball, he wasn’t too bothered by the change of seasons.

Reporting on baseball was always iffy during my sports tenure. A lot of teams were stuck in the gym waiting for snow to melt off the fields. This March, nature may try to speed things up. This March, we will try to warm up. The long range forecasting crew thinks the month could run 6 degrees warmer than normal. Precip may go up by 1.5 liquid inches. That could translate to 15 inches of snow for the winter sports fans from Benville on the west side of town to Highway One through the woods on the east side. March 1 to 6 should be mild with lighter snows. The 7th to 17th should be sunny and mild. March 18th to the 31st should be wet and warm.

When I retire from TV someday, instead of fixing lawn mowers in my garage like my dad did in Ely, I want to become a baseball coach. I will paint the balls blaze orange and then we can practice outside even in the snow.
