The Ely Echo Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest is now underway, sponsored by Grand Ely Lodge.
Entries are now being accepted, by email only, at [email protected] by March 24.
Ice out is official when a boat can leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the north side of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.
In our first week of entries, we were thinking this was an April Fool’s entry but we’re not sure. Rick Ellis of Ely sent in April 2 at 4 a.m.
Brian Dahlin of Ely is also optimistic for ice out and chose April 12 at 4:05 p.m.
Going with April 13 were Carlos Santos of Charlottesville, VA at 2:20 p.m. and Joyce Bernard of Mt. Airy, MD at 3:43 p.m.
One day before tax day was the choice for Richard Loisel of Waukegan, IL going with April 14 at 11:23 a.m.
Ely guesser Terence H. Cooper picked April 16 at 4:26 p.m.
Liking April 18 was Linda Frisell of Ely at 2:36 p.m.
Two folks circled April 19 on the calendar, Drew Marolt of Ely at 10 a.m. and Tom Grahek of Richmond, VA at 3 p.m.
A trio of entrants had April 20, Bob Murphy of Roseville, MN at 6:28 a.m., Bonnie Borglund of Lakeville, MN at 2:15 p.m. and Dawn Anderson of Ely at 4:38 p.m.
Ely intel shows April 21 works, that’s the entries from Kathy Dahlin at 2:30 p.m. and Joe Hiller at 5 p.m.
May Pat O’Halloran of Ely told us April 22 at 3:46 p.m.
April 24 was the date for Todd and Karen Lucachick of Cohasset, MN at 7:34 a.m. and Jim Grahek of Plymouth, MN at 3 p.m.
Debra Lackey of Ely chose April 25 at 1 p.m., same day but 4 p.m. for Brian Bird of Duluth.
Rosemarie Mobilia Vejtasa of Ely sent in April 26 at 2:26 p.m., the same day as K. Baltich of Ely at 4:51 p.m.
From our neighbor in Babbitt, Bob Anderson likes April 27 at 10 a.m. while Dana Grahek of Ely went with 2 p.m.

Each entry MUST have a complete name, address and phone number as well as the date and time of day for the guess. Incomplete entries are thrown out.
Earliest correct entry wins. First Prize: $100 Grand Ely Lodge Guest Bucks. Second prize is $50 Ely Echo gift certificate, third prize: $25 Grand Ely Lodge Bucks.
Employees of Grand Ely Lodge and the Ely Echo are not eligible to win prizes.

Entries are published in the Ely Echo one time in the contest and remain on file for the contest period.
