The Babbitt Weekly News will be hosting two candidate forums later this month.
The city council candidate forum will take place on Monday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. The forum for mayoral candidates will take place on Monday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.
Both events will take place in the Council Chambers at the Babbitt Municipal Building.
Members of the public are invited to attend. These forums are an opportunity for candidates to share who they are, their vision for Babbitt and how they would handle challenges that arise during their time in city government.
Two candidates filed to run for Babbitt mayor, while five local residents will vie for two open seats on the city council.
Current city council member and former mayor Duane Lossing will seek re-election to lead Babbitt’s government. Former long-time Babbitt clerk-treasurer Cathy Hoheisel will run against Lossing.
Claire High, Jacob Myers, Terrance Switajewski, Glenn Anderson and current council member Joe White filed as candidates for city council.
Shyanne Cersine has since removed herself from the race. However, her name will still be on the ballot since she did not notify the city in time in accordance with state statutes.
White and Jim Lassi are approaching the end of their four-year terms on the council. Lassi will not seek re-election.
Seats held by Duane Lossing and John Fitzpatrick will be on the ballot in 2028. Should Lossing win the mayoral election, an additional seat will open on the council.
Minnesota statutory law states that the vacancy of a city council position may be filled by council appointment if there is less than two years in the unexpired term, or by council appointment followed by a special election.
