Bees are buzzing, but not too much, they’ve settled a lot since spring.
Apples starting to blush, a bit. Pumpkins show potential, everyone I know is giving away cucumbers.
Velvet headed racks with afternoon swagger sure catch our eyes scanning recently mowed hay fields.
The baby ducks of spring, just this past week, took to the wing for the first few times.
Store sale flyers, school supplies of which I require not a single one, I thumb the entire flyer, like I want or even need a number two lead. But I as a kid, couldn’t wait for school to start back up in the fall, seeing pals, and the first cool fall day, oh man, what a feeling, no more humidity, no more sweat, time for kettles of beef stew, one goose honk overhead, I was mentally in a duck blind.
Friday night football games, under the lights, the marching band, and everybody around, was rooting for us to win. Once in the local hardware store an old guy I didn’t know just started shaking my hand and congratulating me on what he thought was my stellar football skills the previous game. The college scouts must have missed seeing me that week. But this week the football teams entire schedule is plastered to the stores front door. It’s almost go time. And now, I’m the old man, looking for a hand.
