In an effort to reconnect with the community, Vermilion athletics will offer free admission to all home athletics events this fall.
Beginning with this weekend’s home volleyball clashes with Northland and Alexandria, continuing with the Sept. 12 football home opener with Rochester, and carrying on throughout the fall, no tickets will be sold.
“We’re inviting the entire Ely community to come and see our student-athletes in action,” said Keith Turner, a former Vermilion athlete and coach who has returned to the community college this fall as the new campus director. “We want to get back to the days of competing for championships and setting the standard in the North, and to bring back that home field and home court atmosphere we’ve been known for.”
Vermilion has four home football games at Ely School Stadium, starting with the Sept. 12 date with Rochester and continuing Sept. 19 (Mesabi), Sept. 26 (DuPage, IL) and Oct. 10 (North Dakota State College of Science). Each game begins at 1:30 p.m., with the exception of the Sept. 26 clash that starts at 1 p.m.
The Vermilion volleyball team, which broke into the win column last week, hosts Alexandria at noon today and has upcoming home games on Sept. 23, Sept. 29, Oct. 2, Oct. 10 and Oct. 14. Game times are set for 6:30 p.m, except for a noon start on Oct. 10.
“College athletics may be the best kept secret in town,” said Tom Coombe, Vermilion’s new athletic director. “We have some outstanding young people on our team, not only from Minnesota and the upper Midwest but all over the country. I think if people come out and see a game they’ll want to come back.”
