Team Borealis kicked off their high school/middle school mountain bike race season, Aug. 29-30, at the Xcel Energy Mountain Bike Park in Shakopee.
They joined 25 teams from across the state to line up for their respective races. Nine Borealis riders merged with a sea of over 1,000 riders racing in several events over the weekend.
All Borealis racers moved up to new categories this year. Addison Kannas led team results, taking third in the 6.5 mile JV2 girls race.
George Sponholz started the season as the first Team Borealis rider to qualify for the top varsity division. Sponholz completed four laps, for a total of 13 miles in 59 minutes and 52 seconds to finish 53rd in the field of elite boys.

• Seventh grade boys D2: James Townsend 19th, Sawyer Kannas 24th, Porter Franciskovich 47th
• Eighth grade boys D2: Mason Lee 64th
• Freshman boys D2: Carrington Kosinski 55th
• Freshman girls: Beck Sponholz 8th
• JV2 girls: Siiri Nelson 26th Borealis has a weekend off to prepare for their second of four regular season race weekends on September 12th and 13th at Whitetail Ridge in River Falls, Wisconsin. Those who qualify will move on to the State Championship at Redhead Mountain Bike Park in Chisholm, Oct. 10-11.
