An early morning fire on Sunday, August 30, caused extensive damaged to the dock system at the Fortune Bay Marina near Tower. Firefighters from Greenwood Township and Breitung Township, along with the Tower Area Ambulance Service responded to the blaze. In addition to the damage to the dock system, three watercraft were destroyed and several other watercraft were damaged. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation with assistance from the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office. Photo by Fortune Bay.

There were no injuries in a fire early Sunday morning that resulted in total losses of three watercraft, minor damage to a couple of other watercraft, plus some extensive damage to a portion of the Fortune Bay marina dock system, according to the Fortune Bay Resort Casino Facebook page.

The cause of the fire on Lake Vermilion is still under investigation.

“Eagle Docks and Vermilion Property Services were quick to step in and did the removal of the vessel while Environmental Troubleshooters put down the oil booms and are still here today doing containment and clean-up of contaminants,” said Fortune Bay Director of Facilities Tony Yeley Monday afternoon.

Yeley said the Greenwood Fire Department brought a truck and two fire boats to aid in the efforts, while the Breitung Fire Department brought one fire boat and one rescue truck.

“Their chief, Brian Trancheff, was here yesterday as well as offering technical and professional advice,” said Yeley, who also gave thanks to Fortune Bay’s security department and marina staff for their assistance.

“Brian really went above and beyond, and we can’t thank him and others enough who have assisted us.”

Fortune Bay thanked all of the agencies and local businesses that were quick to respond to the fire that broke out early Sunday morning at their marina.

Those agencies included the Greenwood Fire Department, Breitung Fire Department, Breitung Police Department, Tower Ambulance, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Police, Deputy State Fire Marshal Andrea Licari, and St. Louis County Deputies Trevor Dowton and Dylan Helman.
