Visiting Proctor scored the win but Northeast Range/Ely made some strides in its home debut.
The Rails were victorious in the Sept. 3 high school girls swimming meet at Babbitt, recording a 48-38 dual meet win.
Early on, Proctor controlled the meet and NRE made up points late after the Rails already had the victory secured and entered only as exhibition in late events.
Nevertheless, Lucy Luthens picked up a win in the 100 freestyle while the meet was still competitive, taking home a narrow victory in the 100 yard freestyle in 1:05.83 and edging out a Proctor swimmer by .14 seconds.
Luthens also teamed with Jorden Borchert, Evelyn Moran and Lindsy Israel to win the 200 freestyle relay in 2:00.50. That race also came down to the wire and the Nighthawks’ foursome prevailed by just over two-tenths of a second.
Later on NRE picked up firsts in the 100 backstroke (Raegan Borchert, 1:30.63), 100 breaststroke (Luthens, 1:30.44) and 400 freestyle relay (Jorden Borchert, Ivy Ohlhauser, Raegan Borchert, Nicole Freking, 4:49.31).
NRE also scored as follows:
• 200 medley relay - 2. Borchert, Borchert, Israel, Luthens, 2:23.61;
• 200 freestyle - 2. Jorden Borchert, 2:34.88;
• 50 freestyle - 3. Ohlhasuer, 32.37;
• 500 freestyle - 3. Nicole Freking, 7:31.90;
• 100 breaststroke - 2. Maddie Johnson, 1:34.82;
• 400 freestyle relay - 2. Moon Vetos-Keen, Moran, Ruby Ice, Olivia Johnson, 5:27.76.
In junior varsity action, NRE’s Olivia Johnson, Ice, Sadie Nelson and Ellie Klingsheim combined to take second in the 200 freestyle relay, while individual thirds went to Ice (100 individual medley), Klingsheim (50 freestyle), Cora Brekke (100 freestyle), Catherine Brekke (100 backstroke) and Macy Coombe (100 breaststroke).
