Dave’s Weather Outlook

Warm and dry may not be the May we want

On April 30, 1975, the Vietnam War ended with the fall of Saigon. A lot of South Vietnamese families escaped communism that day onboard the USS Duluth. I got to interview one of those fellows for my weekly history series called Holding On To History. Chinh Pham is now a lawyer in Boston and his journey to freedom took him from Saigon to Arkansas. That means his intro to America didn’t give him weather shock. He went from one warm and humid climate to another.

I’ve mentioned before that my uncle Gene of the Babbitt HS class of 1961 got drafted right after graduation from UMD and was sent to Saigon in the late 60s. Now that was indeed climate shock for a guy to go from the cold Mesabi Range to the heat and humidity of the tropics.

We are now entering our warm and humid season. However this year, we may have one without the other. This May, we are expecting an inch less than normal rain. Of course, that may be a good thing in one way because last spring’s bugs were terrible! Unfortunately, dry conditions would egg on the already high fire danger.

Along with low rain, May could go up to three degrees above normal. May 1st to the 11th should have some rain showers and the period will start cooler than normal and then head to normal. The 12th to 21st should be sunny, dry and warm. The 27th to 31st should cool a bit and kick up a couple of rain showers. There are signs that June will really dry up and we’ll have details on that coming up next month.
