Mail will now leave Ely by 7 a.m. each day

A national delivery change for U.S. Post Offices has hit the Ely area as well.

Mail sent from Ely will now leave by 7 a.m., instead of 11 a.m. as before. This means anything brought into the Post Office or dropped off there will not leave until the next day.

Blue collection boxes around town will retain the current pick-up time, which includes 10 a.m. for one on Chapman Street.

U.S. Post Offices nationwide have implemented changes to mail truck departure (dispatch) times as part of the U.S. Postal Service’s ongoing network modernization under the “Delivering for America” plan.

Previously, mail in Ely was dropped off around 6:30 a.m. and then picked up by 11 a.m.

The change to dropping off and picking up at the same time went into effect on May 8.

“For us this is unfortunately another example of the U.S. Postal Service taking longer to deliver,” said Ely Echo publisher Nick Wognum.

“We had heard this was coming, but now that it’s here, we’re going to have to see what we can do so people don’t have to wait an extra day to get their paper if they live outside of Ely,” said Wognum.

The Ely Post Office also delivers most of the Amazon packages in this area.
