New site by golf course for Green Mining project

At the May 6 meeting, the Babbitt city council discussed the proposed Green Mining Company plan to purchase three city lots and build a cannabis facility in Babbitt.

“The Planning Commission did have the hearing and well attended, there was lots of pros and cons, and it was decided to just let it sit for a while and let people think,” said council member Jim Lassi.

“It’s kind of hard to make a decision when you have a lot of input and a lot of emotions both ways. So the Planning Commission opted to wait and act on it next month. Let us sink here in and see what happens.”

Council member Duane Lossing read from a letter from Green Mining.

“As we were actively evaluating other locations, we respectfully request that the city council introduce a proposed alternative location at its May 6th meeting. Your prompt action during this critical period will help ensure Babbitt remains our preferred choice for this transformative project.

Lossing asked if the process could be expedited.

“Basically, anything you do right now, if we only have one other area zoned that is (light industrial), and that’s just east of town. It’s 6.45 acres. Yes, there are spots available, but in order to do that, again, you would have to amend the ordinance, which takes a public hearing and a decision where,” said Lassi.

“It seems like the most talked about location is down the Conservation Club Road, where we own 40 acres right west of where the golf course pulls water out of the pond,” said Lossing.

He said the company would have to put in a well and septic. “I don’t know if that’s a non-starter or not.”’ “I think it’s unanimous that the location that we have zoned right now is probably not favorable for our community,” said Lossing.

Contacted after the meeting, Richard Stuart of Green Mining said they are interested in the site near the golf course and have been informed there will be a special meeting on Tuesday, May 20 at 10 a.m. with the Planning Commission.
