Versatile seniors finish at sections

The Section 7A meet didn’t go the way the Ely Timberwolves would have liked.

Despite some individual highlights, the high school boys track team was back in the pack in the standings and also fell victim to injury during Wednesday’s event at Duluth.

An injury to Otto Devine kept him out of two key relays, including the fourby- 800, with Brooks Brenny stepping in to team with Eli Olson, Oliver Hohenstein and Wyatt Devine to place fourth in 8:43.49. Ely had won the event at the 7A North Subsection meet the week before.

Senior Dylan Durkin, who joined Olson in competing in four events at sections, had Ely’s best overall individual showing and placed sixth in the 200 dash in 23. 85 seconds.

Wyatt Devine took seventh in the 800 (2:10.78) while Ely had two scorers in the 1,600 run, with Blake Houde (seventh, 4:58.99) and Oliver Hohenstein (eighth, 4:59.44) placing back-toback.

“Oliver and Blake had pretty good times in the 1,600,” said Ely Head Coach Will Helms. “For Oliver, it was his first time under five minutes.”

In the four-by- 400, Durkin replaced Otto Devine and teamed with Olson, Hohenstein and Milo McClelland to place eighth (3:49.82).

Senior Wyatt Mattson was ninth in the shot put (38-11) and 12th in the discus (1061), while Durkin fouled out of the long jump and was 13th in the high jump (5-6).

Olson also closed out a strong prep track career, finishing 11th in both the long jump (17-9) and triple jump (37-2).

“You had both Eli and Dylan doing four events and Dylan ended up in the four-by-four and he normally doesn’t to that,” said Helms. “We’re going to miss them and they were both really versatile.”

Olson and Durkin were part of an Ely senior group that also included McClelland, Tory Hughley and Mattson.

“We’re losing five guys who were real tough competitors,” said Helms. “Not only Milo and Wyatt, but Tory was in a million relays, and then Dylan and Eli. That’s a really good group who we will miss.”

SUBSECTION MEET Ely had a winning (fourby- 400) relay, a second and third-place showing by Durkin and two top-five finishes by Olson during the May 22 subsection event at Aurora.

Another surprise was turned in by seventh-grader Elliot Eastham, who nearly advanced to sections and settled for an eighth-place finish in the 110 hurdles.
