A former Ely Timberwolves cross country and track standout was across the finish line first in Ely’s annual Independence Day race around the Trezona Trail.
Emmett Faltesek, 22, was the overall winner at the Janet Gensler Memorial Four on the Fourth.
Faltesek, who went on to race collegiately at Concordia- St. Paul, dominated the field with a time of 20:55.
The women’s race was won by Chelsey Youngberg, 31, who was second overall as well in 23:45.
The event doubles as a fundraiser for Ely’s high school track teams and attracted roughly 225 participants.
Taking third-place overall and second among men was Izaak Nosbisch, 26, in 24:15.
Rounding out the top-10 male finishers were:

• Gaven Greshowak, 25:08;

• Boden Sundell, 19, 25:57. Behind Peterson, the remaining top-10 women were:
• Karen Jones, 32, 25:14;
• Molly Brophy, 16, 26:58;
• Francisca Geffre, 18, 27:56;
• Gretta Lowe, 17, 30:05;
• Penelope Leehn, 13, 30:18;
• Reese Slechta, 15, 30:28;
• Jamie Lowe, 48, 30:42;
• Shauna Mayer, 32, 31:26;
• Lucy Soderstrom, 27, 31:48.
The event is named after the late Janet Gensler, who was instrumental in starting the race several years ago.

ON THE TRAIL AND heading toward the finish was Elsa Ellerbroek (915) of Ely, in the July 4 morning race.

AMID THE PACK of runners in the July 4 race were Siiri Morse (843) and Nicola Mony (855).

IN THE KIDS RACE ON THE FOURTH, Dailie Lahn (10) pushed hard to stay in front of Sophia Huotari.

EXTRA BAGGAGE during the July 4 race around the Trezona Trail for Rachel Hedlund (911), who carried a canoe. By her side were Abby Dare (995) and AJ Ostlund (992).
