Plans have been finalized for the annual Veterans’ Night celebration at the ballpark.
All veterans and military personnel will be admitted free for the American Legion baseball games, set for Thursday night during the Ely Echo Midsummer Classic at Veterans Memorial Field.
They’re also invited to take part in the on-field veterans tribute that will occur at the conclusion of the game that occurs at 5:15 p.m. that day. The approximate starting time of the ceremony is between 6:45 and 7:15 p.m.
The event has become a staple on Ely’s summer baseball calendar.
“We’ve done the veterans’ tribute the last 20 years or so and it has been very well received,” said Tom Coombe, head coach of Ely’s Legion team and longtime tournament director. “We’ve had some very moving opening ceremonies before our major state VFW and Legion tournaments, and it is something we want to do every year whether or not we are hosting a big tournament. We hope a lot of veterans will come out and participate.”
“We invite veterans of all ages to come out to the ballpark and take in the games, and what better way to finish the season than to recognize all of our veterans and those who have served or are serving in our military forces.”
Veterans and representatives of all military branches or guard units are invited to attend. A sign-up sheet will be posted at the ticket booth to gain admission.
Veterans will also be treated to a free meal and beverage from the concession stand, complements of the Ely’s American Legion Auxiliary.
The veterans tribute will be part of a festive week of baseball in Ely, as 11 teams take part in the Midsummer Classic - the largest Legion baseball event in the northern half of the state.
