Betty Jayne Housey, age 86 of Delano, dies

Betty Jayne Housey, age 86 of Delano, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 23, 2017 at Lake Ridge Care Center in Buffalo.
Betty was born on April 26, 1931 in Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Hilbert and Myrtle (Fibeig) Butzke. Betty was a 1949 graduate from Ely High School.
On September 12, 1949 she married Leonard Housey in Ely, MN. Together they had a son Randy, and daughter Robyn and resided in the Ely area. Betty enjoyed sled dog racing for many years.
Betty moved to Watertown, MN in 1987 and worked at the laundromat in Waconia and eventually Elim Home in Watertown for over 10 years. She was a girl scout troop leader. She loved cooking and baking, sewing, reading, gardening, house-keeping and chatting with the residents at Elim. Betty moved to Delano in 2010 and loved watching the MN Twins and Timberwolves on television. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joseph “Joe” Osaben, 96, of Ely, dies

Joseph Frank Osaben, 96, of Ely, passed away peacefully October 25, 2017 while under the loving care of the staff at Carefree Assisted Living in Ely. He was born in Ely on January 11, 1921 to Frank and Josephine Osaben. He was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School. During the depression, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp at a camp in Isabella, MN. He served in the Coast Guard in the Aleutian Islands during WW II. After the war he worked for several years underground in the Zenith mine in Ely. He then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and graduated from the carpentry program. He returned to Ely and worked at Reserve Mining in Babbitt until his retirement in 1984.
Joe was a lifelong outdoorsman and enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing with friends and family. In his later years, his passion was tending his remarkable vegetable garden, picking wild blueberries, and visiting with his many friends.

Arlene Ann Branwall, age 75, White Bear Lake, dies

Arlene Ann Branwall, age 75, White Bear Lake, passed away peacefully and gracefully with family by her side after an 18 year courageous battle against breast cancer. Survived by her loving husband and best friend, Lee, and children, Eric (Jill), Davin, daughter-in-law Michelle Branwall Harty, sisters-in-law, Donna (James) Hill and Tina Chiabotti; brother-in-law Jack Achterberg and special cousin Joann Grahek. Grandchildren: Lindsey Branwall, Nathan Branwall, Lane Branwall, Tyra Branwall and Tristan Branwall and the three neighborhood Greene boys who adopted her as their grandma. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Esther Espland, son Lee Branwall, Jr. and sisters-in-law Nancy (Jack) Achterberg and Rita (Steve) Sunsdahl.

Robert Hargadine, 68, of Ely, dies

Robert Hargadine, 68, of Ely, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely. He was born October 2, 1949 in St. Paul, MN to Ruth and Robert Hargadine.
He was a fishing guide for Moose Bay Company, Ely. He was preceded in death by his parents and good friend Joanne Johnson.
He is survived by siblings: Shannon, Noreen, Bridgit, Michael, Kate, Keith and Meegan; nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3 at Kerntz Funeral Home
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Helen Jeanette Whiting, 85 of Ely dies

Helen Jeanette Whiting, 85 of Ely died Sunday, October 15, 2017 in Ely Bloomenson Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 30, 1932 in Embarrass, the daughter of Richard and Fannie (Pulkinen) Niemi; and married Joseph Whiting on June 17, 1950 in Ely. Helen grew up in Embarrass, lived in Ely, and on Armstrong Lake prior to returning to Ely in 1969.
She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star; enjoyed dancing (especially polkas), crossword and jig saw puzzles, knitting, crocheting, traveling, camping and fishing. She cherished time spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lynne Hill, 65, of Ely, dies

Lynn (Mellette) Hill left her home on Bumtside Lake to be reunited with loved ones in Heaven on October 17,2017. She was born in Batavia, IL on May 31, 1952.
Lynne lived most of her life in Scottsdale, AZ where she was a partner in an insurance adjusting company. After retiring she realized her dream and moved to Ely five years ago, becoming active in the arts.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Elaine (Lindskog) Mellette and her father, Clare Mellette.
Lynn is survived by daughter, Katie Hill and a son, Erik Hill, both of Arizona; partner Rich Hill of Ely and sister and brother-in-law, Jerry and Claire Taylor of Ely. Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Merle Lunceford, 82, of Ely, dies

Merle W. Lunceford, 82, of Ely, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at his residence. Merle Lunceford was born in Long Prairie, MN on May 2, 1935, third of five children of Alma and Lyle Lunceford. He was a graduate of Long Prairie High School who went on to earn his teaching degree from St. Cloud State University.
He taught mathematics at Ely Memorial High School in the same room for 34 years. While teaching, he earned a Master’s degree from Purdue University by traveling to West Lafayette, Indiana during the summer.

Linda Louise (Levar) Powers, 69 of Esko, dies

Linda Louise (Levar) Powers, 69 of Esko entered God’s Kingdom Saturday, October 14, 2017 in Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth surrounded by family after a year-long battle with Type AL Amyloidosis.
Linda was born on December 1, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. In 1952 her parents Lenard and Ann (Paun) Levar moved to Babbitt, MN where Linda attended school. She graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1965 and in 1967 received an AA degree from Ely Junior College.

Martin Rodich of Eagan, 66, dies

MARTIN RODICH, of Eagan, 66, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2017 after a year long struggle with recurring pneumonia and weakened lungs. Marty was born in St. Paul on March 2, 1951 and grew up rifle and bow hunting, fishing, canoeing, and working alongside his dad learning the tricks of most every trade. His favorite was that of electricity. Much of his free time was spent up in Ely, MN with family and friends where he loved the woods.

Carol Jean (Oberstar) Debeltz, 74, dies

Carol Jean (Oberstar) Debeltz, 74, of Hutchinson, MN moved the polka party to heaven on September 29, 2017. A celebration of her life will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Hibbing, MN on October 21, 2017 at noon. A traditional Catholic mass will be followed with a joyous celebration of Polka music, balloons, noisemakers and her favorite foods of tacos and ice cream.
