Ely-Winton Historical Society to host annual meeting, community memory share

WINTON, MN — On Wednesday, June 18, the Ely-Winton Historical Society will invite the public to their Annual Meeting and Community Memory Share. It will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Winton Community Center, offering folks a chance to reflect on the town’s evolving history and contribute to its living archive.

The evening will begin with free root beer floats and social hour at 6 p.m., followed by a brief business meeting at 6:30 p.m. The highlight of the event, however, is the 7 p.m. Memory Share, where community members are encouraged to speak from the heart.

“There’s something magical about memory, the way it keeps a town alive long after streets have changed and buildings have disappeared,” said Kelsey Cooke, Executive Director of the Ely-Winton Historical Society. “We want to capture those lived experiences that don’t always make it into history books.”

This year’s storytelling focus includes recollections of lost landmarks like the old school, hospital, or community church. Attendees will be asked: What buildings are no longer here that you remember? and What’s one thing we should never forget about Winton? Whether it’s a person, a tradition, or a pivotal event, these personal stories will be recorded and added to the Society’s growing Community Memory Archive.

Pre-selected speakers will kick off the Memory Share, and all attendees are welcome to contribute their own stories, with a suggested time limit of three minutes. Those who wish to share more will have an opportunity to follow up with the Society for a longer oral history interview.

In addition to storytelling, attendees will receive updates on society projects and volunteer opportunities. While all are welcome to attend, only members may vote during the business portion of the evening. Household memberships will be available for purchase at the event for $25.

The Historical Society encourages everyone to bring a friend, bring a story, bring your memories.

“When we share what we remember,” the Society notes, “we ensure it’s never forgotten.”
