Ryan Denzer-Johnson of Embarrass Township was charged last Monday on three counts of first-degree sexual misconduct against a female child under 14 years of age.
The 43-year-old formerly taught mathematics at Northeast Range and later Mesabi East, alongside his involvement in the both schools’ robotics programs. He is no longer employed at either district. Denzer- Johnson additionally worked with other adolescents as a youth leader at a local church.
In a forensic interview, the victim disclosed that Denzer-Johnson who knew her beyond his roles in the schools and the ministry - had assaulted her on multiple instances over a significant period of time.
Denzer-Johnson admitted in a statement to law enforcement at least three specific instances in which he assaulted the girl. He also told officers he “can’t tell (them) that that never happened other times.”
In addition, Denzer-Johnson stated he “can’t guarantee there wasn’t some grooming before (the incidents). There probably was.” He admitted he had known for years that he was inclined toward such misconduct.
“Despite being aware for some time that he was prone to sexually assault minor females, Defendant put himself in positions with access to minor females: teacher in the Babbitt school district, youth ministry, and church advisory board,” stated assistant St. Louis County attorney Amber Pederson in a bail recommendation document.
“Defendant is a danger to Juvenile Female A and the public,” Pederson stated.
A remote hearing is scheduled for Aug. 25 at 8:30 a.m. in which Denzer-Johnson will make a second appearance in court, as required by Rule 8 of the Minnesota Rules of Criminal Procedure. Denzer-Johnson will be provided the opportunity to plead guilty.
According to the Minnesota’s Office of the Revisor of Statutes, the penalty for first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor may include up to 30 years in prison, and not less than 12 years.
