At the Ely Public Library on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. the program will be Coiled Basket Making with Erica LeMay – for ages 12 through adult. Learn basic basketry skills and stitch techniques to create a small coiled basket in this guided workshop. Participants will start by wrapping yarn around a cotton rope core to build the base of their basket. Erika LeMay will guide attendees through stitching and creating simple patterns using different colors. Beginner artists will follow along to spiral their baskets outward and upward to complete a functional work of art! Pre-register for this program as there are a limited number of slots.

The Ely Climate Group will hold a discussion about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle waste on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Ely Area Community Hub, 760 Miners Drive. This is by Zoom and in person. Sandy Gunderson will teach that trash is a resource. The Zoom link is https:// elyminnesota.com/elyclimate/ The Lake Vermilion Cultural Center in Tower will once again be hosting the comic opera, La Serva Padrona on Sept. 14 beginning at 2 p.m. This presentation of La Serva Padrona is a Modern English version of the comic opera by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, revised by Steve Solkela. During intermission the audience will be given the opportunity to play bingo. Tickets are available in advance for $20 on the LVCC website https://vermilionculturalcenter.org or at the door for $25.

At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday at 2 p.m. the program will be Library Scientists: Animal Habitats & Adaptations, geared toward elementary age kids but all are welcome. Have you ever thought about how animals live outside all the time? How do they live outside when it’s so cold like it is right now? What other special things do animals have to keep them safe outside? Join Jessie to learn more about these topics. Please pre-register. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

At the Ely Public Library on Thursday at noon the program will be Deadly Knits. Knit-along (or crochet) while we listen to and discuss a true crime podcast. If you have a project you would like to share or work on, bring it along and you can work on it in the company of others! This is a welcoming environment where you can ask questions and share tips. Registration not required. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

At the Ely Public Library on Friday 3:15 p.m. the program will be Talk Like a Pirate Day Movie. Shiver your timbers and walk the plank over to the library to watch Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Those who attend will be issued an eyepatch to keep. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

The North St. Louis County Soil and Water Conservation District will be holding a 75th anniversary open house on Sept. 22 from 2-6 p.m. at 505 Third St. No., Ste. A in Virginia. There will be a K9 demonstration on AIS detection at 2 p.m.

Sept. 26 is the deadline to apply to be a Lunch Buddies mentor and change a life this school year. Mentors are needed at elementary schools in Aurora, Babbitt, Cherry, Chisholm, Ely, Eveleth, Hibbing, International Falls, Keewatin, Mt. Iron, and Virginia. United Way of Northeastern Minnesota’s Lunch Buddies program matches mentors and mentees to share one lunch break a week throughout the school year.
