Students plan numerous events

Homecoming Week at EHS

Classes remain in session, but there’s also plenty of fun in the works at Ely Memorial High School.

Fall Homecoming Week begins Monday, runs through the week and includes a host of activities.

A full week of festivities is planned by the high school student council, culminating with an Oct. 3 dance in the high school gymnasium.

Homework, quizzes and tests may at least temporarily go by the wayside as students celebrate this week.

Pep rallies are a big part of the lineup, with the major pep rally of the week set for 9:05 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the high school football stadium.

That’s where royalty will be crowned, class competitions and games are in the works and the pep band will perform.

Wednesday evening promises fun at the football stadium, with the annual Juniors vs. Seniors “PowderPuff” football game - set for 7 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 3 brings the week to a grand close.

In what has become an Ely Homecoming tradition, on Friday morning students will take part in community service projects.

That’s set from  9 to 11 a.m., with float decorating to follow on the school campus.

A fifth-hour pep rally is also part of Friday’s schedule, and the student council is still working on the possibility of a “mini-parade” on the streets around the school at some point that day.

That evening, Ely takes on Chisholm in the Fall Homecoming football game, set for 7 p.m. at Ely School Stadium.

Floats will be shown at halftime and Homecoming royalty will also be introduced.

Organizers are still working on a potential tailgate party and games at the baseball field prior to the football game.  Plans were not finalized prior to the Echo’s Thursday deadline.

The Homecoming dance will bring the celebration to a close, and it’s scheduled for after the football game at the high school gymnasium from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Dress-up days are also part of Homecoming, with students dressing according to various themes including Beach Day (Monday), Class Color (Tuesday), Athlete vs. Mathlete (Wednesday), Rhyme without Reason (Thursday) and Extreme Red and White (Friday).

High school sports events are once again a big part of the week, with the cross country teams hosting their only home meet of the season at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the golf course.

Both the volleyball and girls swimming teams also have home events, with the volleyball team hosting Northeast Range on Monday and North Woods Tuesday, with the girls swimming team hosting Duluth Denfeld Tuesday afternoon at Babbitt.

Students will vote for king and queen candidates with the royalty announced at Tuesday’s pep event.
