Winless Vermilion struggles at home

The top two teams in the Northern Division showed little mercy last weekend in Ely.

Winless Vermilion had the dubious distinction of facing Northland and Alexandria, who rule the roost in the North, on consecutive nights.

The results weren’t pretty for the community college volleyball team, which lost to both in three straight sets and fell to 0-15 for the season.

Northland, which is in second place, picked up a 25-8, 25-20, 25-16 sweep to open Parents’ Weekend on Sept. 26.

Vermilion’s only highlight came in the second set, as it stayed close with the visiting Pioneers.

Northland dominated the rest of the way behind the strength of hitter Sierra Westberg, who delivered 18 kills. Teammate McKenzie Dahl added 11 and setter Kaydence Augustine finished with 37 assists.

The Ironhawks got six kills each from freshmen Emily Burns and Paige Wilson, while former Ely Timberwolf Aubree Gerlovich finished with 15 set assists and 13 digs.

Amie Strange also had 18 digs for Vermilion.

The following afternoon, division-leading Alexandria cruised to a 25-7, 25-14, 2516 victory.

Five Alexandria players had at least six kills and setter Maddy Stocker set them up, finishing with 26 set asissts.

Gerlovich had 11 assists for the Ironhawks with many going to Burns, who had a team-best eight kills.

Strange wound up with 13 digs, Olivia Keys finished with nine and Makayla Woody wound up with eight for Vermilion.
