Morse board questions fire danger reductions

The Town of Morse board met on Oct. 14 and dispatched with a light agenda.

The board discussed information from Teresa Floberg of the Ely Fire Shed.

At a previous meeting Floberg was questioned over work reportedly done in Morse to reduce fire danger. The board pointed to projects that were listed yet were outside the township.

An updated list was provided to the board.

“I would actually like to know who some of these people are,” said board chair Terry Soderberg. “When you look at all the work that they’ve done, boy, I sure haven’t talked to anyone. We haven’t seen a thing on Maple Street but they claim they did it.”

Township resident Sarah Vogl said she had some property that benefited from the Firewise program.

“We didn’t get any money but we participated in a balsam removal,” said Vogl. “We have property on Pine Tree Trail.”

Chippewa Shores was listed as an area that had work done. Supervisor Bob Berrini questioned that one.

“They said they did six or seven house on Chippewa Shores. I’ve been here 49 years and I haven’t seen anything done yet,” said Berrini.

“I don’t think people are aware that there’s money available or services available,” said Soderberg.

In other business the board:

• Approved transferring the township’s checking account from Wells Fargo to Frandsen.

• Heard a report from Soderberg that a property owner on West Shagawa Road would only allow a power line extension if it was underground.

• Approved a resolution to again apply for Local Road Improvement Program funds from MNDOT for roads in Romberg Acres. The board had received letters of support from Sen. Grant Hauschild and Rep. Roger Skraba. The project cost was updated to $605,000 with a grant application of $500,000.

• Approved having Butch Pecha do some work required by St. Louis County before township roads could be plowed this winter.

• Nominated Berrini for a two-year term on the RAMS board.

• Heard an update from Soderberg on the Lodging Tax Board with requests being approved from the city of Ely for $20,000 for maintenance at the new trailhead and $36,000 from the Chamber for staffing the new location.

• Berrini reported the Ely Area Ambulance Service purchased a new ambulance and sold an older model. He said no meetings have been held recently.

• Changed the next meeting to Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 5 p.m.
