On Saturday, Oct. 11, The Heart of the Woods Quilters in conjunction with the American Legion Women’s Auxilliary, awarded 21 Local veteran’s with a Quilt of Valor. The veterans’ years of service spanned 1950 to 2020 and covered every branch of the service.

The Quilt of Valor Foundation appreciates the service and sacrifice of those who are serving or have served in the armed forces and protect our freedoms. In 2003, Catherine Roberts, the QOVF founder, created the concepts that underpin the QOVF mission statement: To cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

A Quilt of Valor is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a service member or veteran who has been touched by war. The quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our nation.” It is awarded to a veteran, it is not a gift and it is recorded. Nationally, as of October 2025 a total of 424,428 have been awarded.

In 2006 a member of the Heart of the Woods Quilters learned of the Quilts of Valor program and brought the idea back to the quilt group.

In 2007 the local quilters got started making quilts for veterans. This soon expanded to include members of the Vermilion Dream Quilters of Tower and the Going to Pieces Quilters of Virginia. The quilters are generous with their talents and fabric because they are truly grateful for our veterans.
