Halloween is fast approaching and Ely once again has a series of events particularly for young ghosts, goblins and costume-wearers of all sorts.
Hundreds are expected at the annual Trunk or Treat, sponsored by the Ely Chamber of Commerce at Whiteside Park.
It runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, and the park is surrounded by vehicles with open trunks as well as tables and other set-ups allowing for participants to get treats or even play in games.
“Last year, we had around 500 youth who participated. 26 groups, organizations, or individuals hosted a trunk,” said Kristen Switajewski, event coordinator for the Ely Chamber. “The event is a fun and safe way for kids to go out on Halloween. We see every age of kids and kids at heart who participate. It’s nice seeing the community come out and support this event for the kids.”
Just up the street, at Ely City Hall, the Ely Fire Department will be open for business from 4 to 7 p.m.
Ely fire crew members will be handing out treats, and the ladder truck will be out and extended for all to view.
That evening, be on the lookout around town as trick-or-treaters make their way to homes.
Ely Police Chief Chad Houde stressed this week for drivers to use caution and slow down, given the heavy foot traffic in many areas of town.
Earlier in the day, Ely’s public library will be open and staff will be handing out treats.
“The library loves to have people come and trick or treat,” said librarian Rachel Heinrich.
Heinrich invited preschool children in particular to come during th eday.
“It’s a great option for poeple who have very little kids to give them trick or treating experience,” said Heinrich. “They can come any time during the day.”
