So far, so good for the Vermilion Ironhawks.
In less than a week, the community college women’s basketball team rattled off three straight wins - all in dominant fashion.
The Ironhawks blasted division rival Itasca 88-44 in Wednesday’s home debut, improving to 3-0 for the young season and rapidly closing in on last year’s win total of five.
The victory followed a sweep as last weekend’s Riverland Classic in Austin, where the Ironhawks cruised past the host Blue Devils 7722 and scored a 76-55 win against Itasca.
Wednesday’s rematch with Itasca was even more one-sided, with sophomore Tamia Cahee putting on a show.
The Louisiana native, who led the state in scoring in 2024-25, had 20 first-half points and a game-high 30 for the night.
The deep Ironhawks put the comparatively thin Vikings away early.
Vermilion pressured Itasca into mistakes and took a 21-4 lead after one quarter and 42-15 by halftime.
The second half was academic, and second-year head coach Ryan Zyla was able to make full use of his deep roster.
In all, 12 Vermilion players scored on the night.
Aleysha Maya, a freshman guard from Ecuador, reached double digits with 14 points and Trinity Bodie was next with 13.
Kye Clater, another in the freshmen contingent, also reached double digits with 11 points.
• Vermilion got 16 points each from Cahee and Alyria Greene in Sunday’s win against Itasca.
Both had 11 rebounds to complete double-doubles.
Clater came off the bench to add 11 points for the Ironhawks, Maya scored eight, and freshman Danita Gonzalez had six points to go with eight steals and six assists.
• The Ironhawks continue their travels this weekend, with Devils Lake, N.D., the destination.
They meet two NJCAA Division II schools in Williston State (N.D.) and Lake Region (N.D.). today and Sunday, with a Nov. 14 matchup against Anoka-Ramsey to follow, at Hibbing.
