I’m sad to see that my sixth grade teacher Bernie Barich has passed away. He was the teacher who introduced me to meteorology in 1975. I was one of those kids who never figured out that high air pressure means fair weather and low pressure means foul weather. It took another 20 years to catch on to that. Now, by hook or by crook, I’m the longest serving broadcast meteorologist in the Northland and I teach my own students at the Lake Superior College Center for Advanced Aviation about high and low pressure. Some of them in turn never figure out that highs are dry and lows are wet.
This December, we may have more high pressure than low pressure. December 2025 is slated to feature a couple of big cold snaps. The temperature could average out four degrees colder than normal. Unfortunately for snow fans, our recently reappeared drought will continue. Snow totals may be five inches short of normal.
December 1 to 10 should be cold with only light snow showers. The 11th to 19th will be even colder with only flurries falling. Christmas week may turn toward the mild with a warm spell expected from the 20th to 25th. The 26th to 31st will turn dry and cold.
Best wishes to all in Ely, Babbitt and Winton this holiday season 2025! May you get the precip totals you want with a temperature range you can afford.
