Police look into package thefts

The Ely Police Department is investigating reports that packages are being taken from homes in town.

As the holiday season approaches, more and more packages are being delivered and the police have received word that at least two people have had items stolen.

“It does sound like it’s happening throughout town,” said assistant police chief Mike Lorenz. “We’re hearing a lot of it through the grapevine.”

Police have also received two reports and Lorenz said at this time, “It’s mostly smaller stuff.”

“They don’t seem to be targeting any sort of packages in particular,” said Lorenz. “Clothing was in one of them and another a figurine.”

Lorenz said that police first learned of the thefts via social media.

“And we had a call that a package was stolen and at the time we were told that four other neighbors (had items stolen),” said Lorenz.

“Our officer has been trying to get in touch with these people to see if it was legitimate. And through the course of the investigation we figured out one of the packages was picked up by a neighbor or accidentally delivered to the wrong address. But it does sound like (some thefts) are happening.”

Lorenz said that as of Tuesday, police have “not gotten anything substantial” in terms of leads.

“We’re hoping that somebody had a Ring camera or security footage to give us something to go off of,” said Lorenz.

By way of its Facebook page, the Ely Police Department said, “We want to remind everyone to stay alert and take a few simple steps to help protect your property.”

They offered these tips to reduce the risk of theft:

• Track your packages and bring them inside as soon as possible;

• Consider having deliveries sent to your workplace or a trusted neighbor;

• Use delivery instructions such as “place behind house,” “inside porch,” or other concealed locations;

• Install a security camera if you have the ability;

• Report any suspicious behavior right away.

Anyone who has experienced a package theft or has information is urged to contact the Ely Police Department at 218-365-3222.

Police also ask to “Take note of any suspicious vehicles or people in your neighborhood, and jot down the license plate if you can. Also, keep an eye on your Ring camera and security cameras for anyone who appears suspicious.”

Information, pictures, or videos may also be emailed to [email protected].
