In four previous games, Bagley-Fosston scored at least 10 goals three times.
Freshman goaltender Henry Fetterer and rest of the Timberwolves’ defense were able to limit the damage in a Dec. 5 high school hockey game at the Ely Arena, but not enough to pull off an upset.
The high-scoring Flyers scored three times in the final period, pulling away for a 6-2 win.
Ely (1-2) got on the board quickly with a goal by junior Owen Marolt, and the Wolves were within a goal early in the third period.
But Bagley, which peppered Fetterer with 46 shots on goal, took charge in the final 15 minutes and secured its fifth consecutive win.
Isaac Decoteau and Wyatt Gerbracht scored two goals each for the winners, and James Palmer had a four-point night including three assists.
Ely led for much of the first frame after Marolt’s goal, but Decoteau lit the lamp with 1:39 left in the period to tie things up.
Play was largely in Ely’s end in the second period, and the visitors scored twice in the final four minutes.
Wyatt Gerbracht was assisted by Palmer, and Decoteau’s second goal - assisted by Jackson Gerbracht and Grant Merschman - came with 14 seconds left and was a backbreaker.
Marolt scored again early in the third period, but the Wolves misfired on a couple of breakaway chances - including one shorthanded - and the Flyers pounced.
Wyatt Gerbracht scored on the power play to give the visitors a two-goal cushion, and Bagley-Fosston added two more goals on the power play, by Reid Gerbracht and Palmer, to finish things up.
Play got a bit chippy in the third period, with 11 total penalties, eight taken by the Wolves.
Three of Bagley’s six goals came with a man advantage.
Senior Rhett Johnson had two assists for Ely while both Hunter Halbakken and Jayden Zemke had one.
Fetterer, in his second career start, wound up with 40 saves.
• Tuesday night’s home matchup with International Falls was postponed, and the Wolves are in the midst of a two-game weekend home set with Mora.
After Friday night’s contest, Ely is back on the ice today for a 1 p.m. tilt.
• The Wolves go south Dec. 19-20 for a road trip to Faribault and Austin, while the annual holiday tournament has been cancelled because of a lack of teams.
