The Ely Memorial High School winter concert will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. in Washington Auditorium. At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. the program will be Library Scientists: Forensic Science – for grades 3-5. Learn about fingerprints and how they are used to solve crimes with Jessie. Must pre-register. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
History Happy Hour delves into the rich history of the Ely, Minnesota Area with pint-sized stories that are informative, entertaining and free in less than a half an hour. December’s History Happy Hour gets festive with origin stories for your favorite holiday carols! How did ancient pagan winter solstice celebrations evolve into elementary school children singing ‘Up on the Rooftop” at the holiday concert? Why so many gifts for the 12 days of Christmas? What is wassailing? Find out at this month’s program on Dec. 17 at 5 p.m. Join host, Jess Edberg, executive director of the Dorothy Molter Museum as she scratches the surface of a local history topic, inspiring listeners to take a deeper dive on their own. This program is offered as a free, in-person, 30-minute or less presentation October through May, typically on the third Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. at the Boathouse Brewpub & Restaurant in Ely, Minnesota. History Happy Hour is supported in-kind by the Boathouse Brewpub, Ely’s Heritage Preservation Commission, the Dorothy Molter Museum, Ely-Winton Historical Society, Boundary Waters Connect and the Ely Folk School.
At the Ely Public Library at noon on Thursday, Dec. 18 the program will be Deadly Knits. Knit-along (or crochet) while listening to and discussing a true crime podcast. This is a welcoming environment where you can ask questions and share tips. Registration not required. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
The Washington Elementary winter concert will be held on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 1:15 p.m.
The Ely Community Center is hosting a month of holiday fun, including the holiday lights contest, holiday light bingo, and a community holiday lights celebration on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 5-6 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
At the Ely Public Library on Friday, Dec. 19 at 3:15 p.m. there will be two holiday movies. Get some holiday spirit with a great old-fashioned movie double feature – The Muppet Christmas Carol followed by the 1947 version of Miracle on 34th Street. The Muppet Christmas Carol will start promptly at 3:15 p.m.; Miracle on 34th Street should start at 4:45 p.m. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
The Ely Memorial High School alumni hockey game will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 23 at the Ely Ice Arena.
The Mesabi Symphony Orchestra and Northern Lakes Arts Association present New Year’s Eve - An Evening of Music and Celebration featuring Ian Francis Lah and other local stars of the stage accompanied by the Mesabi Pops Orchestra. The event takes place at Ely’s Historic State Theater, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a lavish reception and cash bar. The music starts at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a champagne toast to ring in 2026. Tickets are $50 and are only available in advance online at www.mesabisymphonyorchestra. org City of Winton is hosting a Holiday Party on Dec. 27 at 5 p.m. at the Winton Community Center. They will have music, food, bring your own adult beverage.
Everyone is welcome to play MahJong at the Ely Community Center on Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m.
