Home sweep for Ely girls

Home sweep for Ely girls

There wasn’t much rust, and not much in the way of competition, as the Ely Timberwolves got back on the court after a better than two week layoff.

Ely dominated two home games as part of the Ely Holiday Classic, with the Wolves scoring a 71-32 high school girls basketball win over Two Harbors on Monday, and demolishing a completely overmatched Fond du Lac team 95-15 on Tuesday.

The sweep gave the Wolves a 3-4 record for the season.

Neither game provided any sort of a test for the Wolves, particularly Tuesday night’s affair - when they ran up a 75-2 lead by halftime against Fond du Lac.

Ely scored at will, turning rebounds and steals into uncontested layups at the other end of the floor.

The Wolves shot nearly 70 percent for the night and four players scored in double digits - with junior Amelia Penke going 11-for-15 on the way to a game-high 22 points.

Kaylin Visser, a sophomore, scored a career- high 16 points while Gretta Lowe finished with 13 and Lydia Shultz added another 11.

Four other Ely players - Julia Zgonc, Lillie O’Neill, Zoe MacKenzie and Kaija Shultz - all added six points.

Lowe also picked up six steals.

• In Monday’s game, the Wolves put things away early and had another running-time win.

Lydia Shultz had a big all-around game, scoring 19 points and adding six steals, four assists and four rebounds.

Ruby Lowe drained four three-pointers and wound up with 12 points, while Penke pulled down 15 rebounds to do with her nine points.

Visser added eight points and five rebounds for the night.

• The Wolves are back in action Tuesday, Jan. 6, against Greenway/ Nashwauk-Keewatin.
