Senior Jack Davies becomes Ely’s all-time leading scorer

2,210…and counting

2,210…and counting

The points keep coming for Ely senior Jack Davies, who now stands atop the high school boys basketball program’s scoring chart.

After first eclipsing the 2,000-point mark in an early-January game, Davies moved into first place in Ely basketball history during a Jan. 15 contest at Mt. Iron-Buhl.

There, Davies passed 2005 graduate Tim Scott, who held the previous record with 2,121 points, and he’s been adding to that total ever since.

Heading into Thursday night’s game at Mesabi East, Davies had amassed 2,210 points and that total figures to grow substantially as the Timberwolves head into the home stretch of the 202526 season.

Davies now heads an impressive list, with Scott, Jim Herberg (1,918 points), Pat Vanderbeek (1,904) and Joey Bianco (1,790) rounding out the top-five.

“I knew Jack was going to do a lot of scoring at an early age as he was hitting lots of threes as an eighth and ninth grader,” said Ely Head Coach Tom McDonald. “He hit 141 threes as a freshman.”

While Davies developed a knack for long-distance shooting, the guard has also diversified his game as he has grown and matured, according to McDonald.

“ At that age he was strictly a catch and shoot guy and as he got older the opponents would take away his three so he had to become more of a scorer,” said McDonald. “He has now become not only a good shooter but someone who can get to the rim to score.

“He also has gotten better over the years at drawing fouls. He didn’t shoot too many free throws when he was younger. I think he has benefited from playing at a very young age and scoring a lot at that young age and he has also been around some very good teammates over the years who have not only gotten him the ball but have taken pressure off of him by being good scorers themselves.”

Davies has been a fixture in the Ely lineup and has helped fuel the Wolves to a hot start this winter.

Entering Thursday’s contest, the Wolves were 13-4 and in solid position to secure home-court advantage when the Section 7A playoffs begin in early March.

• After Friday night’s home game with Littlefork-Big Falls was postponed because of cold weather, the Wolves warmed things up on the home court Monday with an easy, 88-54 win against Carlton, with junior Wyatt Tedrick leading the way.

“Wyatt had a career high 26 (points), had 22 at halftime and carried us in the first half by continually driving to the basket,” said McDonald.

Tedrick went eight-for-10 from the floor and added a couple of three-point bombs as the Wolves were never threatened by the visiting Raptors.

Senior Drew Johnson notched 18 points with eight rebounds for the winners, and Davies contributed another 17 points with six assists.

Tyler Fritz, a senior, dished out five assists and the Wolves got a boost from sophomore forward Arturo Cameron, who had eight points and eight rebounds.

• The Littlefork-Big Falls game will be made up on Thursday, Feb. 5, giving Ely back-to-back home games as Lake of the Woods is in town the following night.
