Ely seniors Johnson, Zemke both selected all-conference in hockey

Two Wolves make All-IRC

Two Ely Timberwolves were both named to the All-Iron Range Conference Team in hockey.

Rhett Johnson and Jayden Zemke, both seniors, were named All-IRC as selected by league coaches.

The recognition followed a season in which the Wolves went 8-15 but picked up conference wins against Moose Lake, Mora and North Shore.

Johnson finished out a strong career in an Ely uniform with a solid senior campaign.

He finished as the Wolves’ leading scorer this winter, notching 33 points with 16 goals and 17 assists.

The forward had a fivepoint game in a January win over Lake of the Woods and four in a victory over Moose Lake.

Zemke anchored Ely’s defense and also displayed one of the most potent shots in the area.

For the season, the senior recorded 21 points with eight goals and 13 assists, including a four-point game against Lake of the Woods.

Two other Wolves received honorable mention to the All-IRC group.

They were sophomore Owen Marolt, Ely’s second highest scorer with 32 points on 15 goals and 17 assists.

Also gaining honorable mention was senior Hunter Halbakken, a forward who had seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points.

• The All-IRC team was dominated by league champion International Falls, who had four honorees: Anthony Yerxa, William Yerxa, Carter Thompson and Caleb Joslyn.
