At the Ely Public Library on Tuesday, March 10 at 3 p.m. the program will be Movie: Othello (1995) – rating R. This spring, there will be two different versions of this Shakespearean play released to film. Get ready to find your favorite portrayals by watching this version from 1995 starring Laurence Fishburne in the title role. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday, March 11 at 3 p.m. the program will be Naturalist Hour: Night Sky. As long as there have been humans on earth, humans have been looking up. Stars are an inspiration for imagination and innovation. Join Andrea Doerr from the Lake Vermilion – Soudan Underground Mine State Park to learn all about it. For all ages.
Stormwise Minnesota is a hands-on disaster preparedness workshop will explore risks to the St. Louis County region — like wildfires and floods — walk through a crisis scenario, and help you build a personalized emergency plan for your family, property or farmstead. This free StormWise Minnesota emergency preparedness workshop will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 at the Ely Community Center.
The Ely School District’s high school band and choir concert will be on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in the Washington Auditorium.
The Ely Knights of Columbus will hold a fish fry on Friday, March 13 from 5-7 p.m. in the basement of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
The Ely Film Festival will be held from Wednesday, March 11 through Sunday, March 15.
History Happy Hour delves into the rich history of the Ely, Minnesota Area with pint-sized stories that are informative and entertaining in less than a half an hour. Since its inception, cinema and its film-making processes have played a significant role in society. Operating as a dynamic twoway street, film both reflects society and molds it. Ely had several theatrical options but the Ely State Theater became its crown jewel entertaining the community starting in 1936 and continues to do so today. Join host, Jess Edberg, executive director of the Dorothy Molter Museum as she scratches the surface on this local history topic, inspiring listeners to take a deeper dive on their own on March 18 at 5 p.m. at the Boathouse Brewpub & Restaurant. History Happy Hour is supported in-kind by the Boathouse Brewpub, Ely’s Heritage Preservation Commission, the Dorothy Molter Museum, Ely-Winton Historical Society, Boundary Waters Connect, the Ely Folk School, Ely Echo, Timberjay and Ely Trivia.
