Ely man arrested again, this time for domestic assault felony charges

For the second time in less than a month, an Ely man was arrested and jailed by police - this time for domestic assault.

Jeremy Stanek, 34, is charged with a felony count of domestic assault by strangulation in addition to a misdemeanor domestic assault count.

The charges stem from a March 13 incident in which police were called to an Ely residence.

Less than three weeks earlier Stanek was arrested and charged with a felony count of threats of violence, a gross misdemeanor count of obstructing the legal process/ interfering with a police officer, and misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and carrying a pistol while under the influence of alcohol.

The latest charges resulted from a police call that occurred just after 11 p.m. on March 13, when officers responded to reports of a domestic assault.

An adult female had barricaded herself in a basement bathroom and called 911, alleging that Stanek had assaulted her.

Ely police officers and a county deputy arrived and heard a female screaming and a glass break, according to court documents.

The officers forced entry into the house and found Stanek coming up the stairs and the alleged victim in the basement bathroom.

Officers observed that Stanek was “obviously intoxicated” and that he had blood coming down on to his face.

The female told officers that Stanek had earlier followed her from room to room, punched her in the right cheek, physically restrained her and pulled out some of her hair, and at one point he had his hands around her throat to the point she was not able to breathe.

The female had blood on her feet which she said came from running over broken glass while trying to escape Stanek, and that Stanek’s blood came from hitting his head on a door while chasing her.

As part of his conditional release from the previous arrest, Stanek was ordered not to use any non-prescribed mood-altering chemicals, to not possess firearms and not engage in acts or threats of violence.

The felony charge against Stanek carries a maximum prison sentence of three years.
