Ely Echo Editorial: Hauschild veers from party on ATV issue

A hearing on March 26 in St. Paul showed the difference one person can make when party loyalty is set aside for what’s best for the district.

We appreciate Sen. Grant Hauschild’s stance on a bill that would decimate the ATV tourism industry in northern Minnesota. Make no doubt about it, that is the goal of most members of the DFL party and locally some NIMBY folks in Eagles Nest Township as well.

Hauschild took a 6-4 vote and made it 5-5 and then Sen. John Hoffman (DFL) also refused to give in and said he wouldn’t support the bill. Kudos to him as well.

SF1245 would move Minnesota toward a designated trail system statewide, requiring routes to be formally mapped and signed in order to remain open. Hauschild noted that many existing routes relied upon by residents and visitors could be lost over time due to the added complexity, cost, and lack of resources needed to maintain them. County land managers have also voiced opposition to the bill.

Hauschild pointed out the proposal represented a major shift away from a system that has worked for decades and risks limiting access, hurting local economies, and creating unnecessary challenges for implementation.

“This isn’t about choosing between protecting our environment and supporting recreation,” Hauschild said. “The people who use these trails are the same people who care deeply about our forests, our lakes, and our land. We can do both, and we should.”

When the state Senate has a one vote difference and the House is tied, taking a stand against your own party is almost unheard of these days. With so much division, stepping out and doing the right thing deserves recognition.
