MacKenzie dominant in wins

In between weather-related postponments, the Ely Timberwolves got on the field twice this week and climbed over the .500 mark.

Four-hit outings by Zoe MacKenzie and Peyton Huntington fueled Wednesday’s 17-6 high school softball win at Littlefork-Big Falls, while the Wolves, while MacKenzie went five-for-five and hurled a shutout as Ely rolled 19-0 last Saturday at Cook County. The wins gave Ely a 5-3 mark heading into a big week that includes two home games Monday and another Tuesday.

At Littlefork, the Wolves opened a tight came by batting around in the top of the seventh and plating nine runs to put things away.

MacKenzie’s three-run home run was a key blow, extending the lead to 12-6 and giving her team some cushion.

That capped a huge day by the senior, who went four-forfive with four runs batted in. At the top of the order, Peyton Huntington had four hits with three runs scored, while Makenzi Huntington was right behind with two hits including a double and four RBI.

Amelia Penke also connected for a home run. Lauren Anderson went three-forfive with two runs scored and both Ella Perish and Lindi Zemke finished with two hits. That backed the pitching of sophomore Naomi Archer, who went the distance, scattering 10 hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Julia Zgonc and Grace Flynn both scored two runs for the Wolves.

• Over the weekend, Ely scored seven runs in the top of the third on the way to a 19-0 rout against overmatched Cook County.

MacKenzie led with her five hits. She also scored three runs.

Zgonc went three-forthree with four runs scored and Flynn was three-forthree with threee runs scored and two RBI.

Anderson scored two runs with two RBI and Lena Flom got into the line up and went two-for-three with three runs scored and three RBI.

Makenzi Huntington added two hits, and in the circle MacKenzie tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts and only one walk.
