The Ely Weavers & Fiber Artists will meet on Monday, May 11, at the Grand Ely at 11:30 a.m. Isaac Hall will be the guest and show his buffalo shirt. All with similar interests are welcomed.

At the Ely Public Library on Monday, May 11 at 3 p.m. the program will be Friends of the Library Book Club. The title for discussion this month is The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. You do not need to be a member of Friends of the Library to attend.

Ely for Ely monthly gatherings continue Tuesday, May 12, at the Ely Area Community Foundation Hub. The doors will open at 7:30 a.m. for complimentary refreshments provided by Palm & Pine Juice Bar. The program will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and conclude by 10 a.m. University of Minnesota Extension collaborators, John Bennet and Aiden Opatz, will present: What’s Really Happening in Ely’s Economy? Using Data to Support Local Businesses.

Join the Ely Climate Group on Tuesday, May 12 at 4 p.m. at the Ely Community Center to hear Keith Steva talk about his plans for electronics recycling on the Range. This will be available by zoom at https://elyminnesota.com/elyclimate/ All are welcome.

At the Ely Public Library on Tuesday, May 12 at 3 p.m. the program will be movie: A League of Their Own - rating PG. “There’s no crying in baseball”, but there’s plenty of fun in this movie starring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis (among others) about the historical women’s baseball leagues that started during WWII. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Vermilion Community College will hold commencement exercises on May 13.

At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday, May 13 at 2 p.m. the program will be Armchair Travel Borneo with Hudson Kingston. Do you want to see the world, but your budget or time commitments keep you from going everywhere? Listen to other local people who have had some fantastic trips and experience the world through their eyes. This is equally great if you are looking for some ideas on where you want to go next or just want to dream your way through another destination with pictures and stories. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

The Ely middle/high school spring choir and band concert will be held on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in Washington Auditorium.

At the Ely Public Library on Thursday, May 14 at 3 p.m. the program will be Get Crafty: Handmade Cards (Mothers & Fathers Day). Let’s make handmade cards for Carefree Living. You also don’t need to be an artist or even consider yourself super creative. A simple message with a fun illustration or even just a bunch of stickers will still be appreciated by the recipient. Registration not required. All cards will be donated to the Babbitt Carefree Living.

Spring Cleanup Days, a junk drop-off event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 15 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 16. Residents can bring unwanted items to Whiteside Park for disposal, no volunteering required.

Citywide rummage sales will be held on Saturday, May 16. Shop and sell throughout Ely, watch for listings and maps coming soon.

Ely City-wide Rummage, Business Crazy Day, and Used Equipment & Watercraft Sale on Saturday, May 16, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. $10 registration fee. Receive a listing on the map and advertising. History Happy Hour delves into the rich history of the Ely area with pint-sized stories that are informative and entertaining in less than a half an hour. The last program of the season will be on May 20 and the subject will be float planes. Float and ski planes used to be a staple in the Ely Area for resort owners, tourists and land managers like the U.S. Forest Service to access remote areas in what is now the Boundary Waters. What types of planes were used? How many resorts did they service? Join host Jess Edberg, executive director of the Dorothy Molter Museum, as she scratches the surface on this local history topic, inspiring listeners to take a deeper dive on their own.
