Boys relay will go to state

A young Ely track team has showed strength in relay events all spring, and that held up even at the section competition.

The Timberwolves’ relay combination of Otto Devine, Wyatt Devine, Oliver Hohenstein and Blake Houde teamed up to finish second in the four-by-800 relay, and in the process earned a berth in this week’s state tournament at St. Michael-Albertville.

The relay showing was the highlight of the day for the Wolves at the Section 7A high school boys track meet, held in the sun on the campus of the University of Minnesota- Duluth on Wednesday.

The Devines, Hohenstein and Houde combined for a time of 8:34.88 at sections, less than two seconds off the pace set by a winning quartet from Cromwell and safely ahead of the rest of the field.

In the four-by-400 relay, the same Ely combination except for Brooks Brenny replacing Houde took fifth in 3:50.38.

Wyatt Devine had the next-best section finish for the Wolves, placing fourth in the 800 in 2:05.15, with Oliver Hohenstein in ninth (2:13.55).

Toivo Forsman grabbed a ninth-place finish in the 110 hurdles in 19.50 seconds, and Brenny (56.79) took ninth in the 400.

Ely’s Jack Rintala, Noah Axlesson, Emory Hohenstein and Summit Smith teamed up for a seventh-place finish in the four-by-100 relay (52.33).

Other section placers were Blake Houde (1,600, 10th, 5:06.73), Oren Solum (1,600, 11th, 5:07:01) and Grady Anderson (1,600, 13th, 5:13.36), Oren Solum (3,200, 14th, 11:34.13) and Emmett Boes (Discus, 13th, 100-5).

The Wolves wound up 14th as a team, finishing with 19 points on the day.

The state-qualifying relay combination will compete Thursday at St. Michael-Albertville.
