Three Wolves land All-IRC honors in softball

Three Ely Timberwolves earned All-Iron Range Conference honors in softball, while two gained All-Arrowhead Conference recognition for the second year in a row.

Senior Zoe MacKenzie and junior Peyton Huntington were both repeat All-Arrowhead selections, and both gained All-IRC honors along with Ely junior Julia Zgonc as selected by league coaches.

Gaining honorable mention to the All-IRC team were two other Wolves senior Makenzi Huntington and sophomore Lindi Zemke.

The recognition comes after the Wolves picked up 13 wins this spring and reached the elimination round of the Section 7A playoffs, falling one game short of reaching the 7A Final Four.

MacKenzie has been the Wolves’ pitching ace, doing the bulk of the throwing duties. This season, she amassed eight wins while working 92 innings, recording 81 strikeouts and walking only 30 and compiling a 3.57 earned run average.

The senior also was a fixture near the top of the Ely batting order. She was second-best on the team with a .444 average, 14 runs scored and a team-leading 27 runs batted in.

Peyton Huntington gained All-IRC honors for a second time and served as the Wolves’ leadoff hitter as well. For the spring, she hit .359 with 25 hits, 24 runs scored and led the team with 27 stolen bases.

Joining the return selections on the All-IRC team was Zgonc, the junior second baseman who led the Wolves with a .514 average, .558 onbase percentage, 36 hits, and 25 runs scored, along with 15 RBI and 22 stolen bases.

Two other Wolves gained honorable mention, with Zemke recognized after starting at first base and hitting a blistering .406 with a home run and 14 RBI to go with 19 runs scored.

Makenzi Huntington also received honorable mention after starting in the Ely outfield and hitting .307 with 21 runs scored and 16 RBI.
